Update on the My Tobii fund

11:01am Wednesday 7th January 2009

I AM writing on behalf of the ARCOS team to thank readers of the Malvern Gazette and Worcester News who have sent contributions to ARCOS towards purchase of My Tobii computer equipment to help David Train communicate again. Your generosity is especially heartening at this time of general belt-tightening. Some have donated anonymously – we respect your wish for privacy, but we want to thank you most sincerely. May we also remind everyone about the Gift Aid scheme. Absolutely every penny counts and if you are a taxpayer, Gift Aid will add 28 pence to each pound you donate. It can make a tremendous difference. There is a simple Gift Aid form on the ARCOS website that can be downloaded for your signature or a form can be collected or sent by post from the ARCOS office.

Farewell Woolworths

11:06am Wednesday 7th January 2009

LAST Monday I went into Woolworth's Church Street branch for the final time. Not to purchase anything. There was really very little left for sale. I just wanted to say Goodbye. I thought of the many items I had bought from her during the 40 years I have lived in the town.

New Years Honours

4:09pm Tuesday 6th January 2009

IN my New Year's Honours list I would like to award Gold Stars to all those householders who in the last year have gone to the trouble of getting parking spaces constructed on their own properties, rather than leave their cars obstructing the roadway day and night.

How to find Yeomanry information

9:52am Monday 5th January 2009

I WAS most interested to read the letter from Simon Hodges concerning the service of his grandfather with The Worcestershire Yeomanry during the First World War. Private H Meades is recorded in the Official History as leaving with the Regiment for Egypt in 1915. There may well be more information to be extracted from our records and given a little time we will be glad to look.

Thanks from the Hunt

9:55am Monday 5th January 2009

A VERY big thank you to all the people of Upton and all around on turning out to see the Hunt meet on Christmas Eve.

Information on the Yeomanry

9:48am Monday 5th January 2009

SIMON Hodges wrote (January 2) about his grandfather who served in the Worcestershire Yeomanry in the first World War. The Regimental History records that Private HJC Meades left Avonmouth for Egypt on April 9, 1915. No doubt further research will give a fuller history of his military career. He had certainly left this County because the Brigade (commanded by my Great Uncle – one of the few Regulars involved) first went from Warwick to Ipswich and then to Newbury Racecourse at the outbreak of war and were subsequently sent to Norfolk to repel an anticipated German invasion My father joined the Yeomanry in 1906 and embarked at the same time. He also served with the Regiment at Gallipoli and through the subsequent campaign. He was badly wounded at Katia and narrowly escaped capture which was the fate of many in the Regiment when the Turks made an attempt to reach the Suez Canal on Easter Day 1916. We hold a Service of Remembrance every year in Worcester Cathedral, as near to Easter as possible, to mark that tragic occasion.

Rotary Tree of Light

10:52am Wednesday 24th December 2008

I AM delighted to report and to express our thanks following the sponsorship of the sixth Malvern Rotary Tree of Light by more people than ever. A total of £9,700 has been generated for charity. That is £4,365 each for Acorns Childrens Hospice and Macmillan Cancer Support with £970 for other Rotary charities.

Thanks for rescuing cat

10:56am Wednesday 24th December 2008

I AM writing to pass on our thanks to Adrian Callow, a tree surgeon based in Stony Ley, Broadwas. Our dearly beloved rescue cat Milly was stuck up a tree for over 36 hours with Christmas (and colder weather) fast approaching, and despite the best efforts of all our neighbours in Cradley she wouldn't come down.

Thanks from Home-Start

11:04am Monday 22nd December 2008

THROUGH your letters pages I would like to say a huge thank you to all the kind and generous readers of the Malvern Gazette who responded to our recent Christmas Gift Appeal.

Comment on the EU

10:53am Monday 22nd December 2008

MAYBE it is a signal that we now have so little control over our destiny that you devoted so much space to letters from two prospective parliamentary candidates that things that should cause a national outcry received no mention in either letter.
